    How often do companies
    grant exceptions to
    new hires for relocation?

A recent survey on new hires completed by the Employee Relocation Council indicated that negotiating an exception for your candidate is easier than it used to be.

Half the companies surveyed reported that they sometimes grant exceptions to their formal relocation policies for new hires. These exceptions are granted primarily to attract the right talent, based on budget, availability of candidates, and even candidate qualifications.

The number of companies that reported “always” or “usually” granting exceptions was higher than the last survey in 2002 (12 percent vs. 7 percent). The percentage of companies who “rarely” or “never” grant exceptions is 38 percent, lower than 46 percent in 2002.

When considering an exception, it is critical to negotiate with facts and not just a blanket number. Often times you hear recruiters say that their candidates were offered $10,000 for relocation and they came back and asked for $50,000 during negotiations, with no explanation as to their reasons for wanting more.

Let Recruiter Relocation help you. Being in the relocation industry, it is our job to help you estimate numbers. We are able to provide solid data from candidate experiences and trends to help justify valid cases for exceptions.

    IRS Announces Optional
    Standard Mileage Rates
    Effective January 1, 2008

    snapshot

The IRS on November 27, 2007, announced new optional standard mileage rates for use in computing deductible costs of operating an automobile for business and other purposes, including moving. Effective January 1, 2008, the new rates are 50.5 cents per mile for business use, up from 48.5 cents in 2007, and 19 cents per mile for moving expenses deductions, down from 20 cents in 2007. The IRS did not provide any reason for the decrease in the moving expense deduction.

    Food For Thought...

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage.

You only have to do very few things right in your life so long as you don't do too many things wrong.

You must remain focused on your journey to greatness.

Where there is an open mind, there will always be a frontier.

Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right!
